The antagonist, Archie Costello, is part of the group, and he is notorious for giving out assignments to other students that usually do physical or psychological harm to them. In strong, staccato scenes that shift from one boy to another Cormier tells about Jerry's persecution when he decides spontaneously to go on saying no after his ten days are up and Brother Leon induces Archie to see this as defiance of the Vigils. Parents need to know that The Chocolate War remains one of the best books for teens when it comes to examining moral issues. However, this book is a treasure and should be read. First time I ever heard of a banned book list. Khalil’s death becomes national news, where he’s called a thug and possible drug dealer and gangbanger. What some have seen as the cynicism of the book kids see as a virtue, and what made this book special in 1974 (the era of Watergate) was that Cormier stood pretty much alone in his absolute negativity, while everyone else, from your school counselors on up, were encouraging you to look on the bright side always.
